Yes, this happened on Saturday – Christmas At The Kings – 6 months early!
Every family has their own unique way of celebrating Christmas & getting the house ready. There are 3 traditions that we have done for as long as I can remember as a family and I would like to share those with you tonight.
Carols By Candlelight
My mum and dad have taken me and my brother to church on Christmas Eve ever since we were babies, my grandparents always come with us too. One of my first memories of Christmas is coming back from church in our old house and getting my tray ready and showing my grandparents what I was leaving for Santa! As the years have gone by, I have learnt it’s my grandad who eats the mince pie and my mum drinks the milk! Over time my godfathers mum has joined us and Matt now comes along too, we all love a singsong and come home for Chinese food, unfortunately we no longer leave a tray out for Santa!
When we moved into our current house I believe we started to buy a real Christmas tree each year, it’s not a massive memory, but definitely over the last 6/7 years it’s been me and dad that go and get the tree. We used to go to the same place, but they closed down 2 years ago, so we are looking at different places. I love a real tree the smell is amazing! It’s always my job to decorate our tree and all of our decorations apart from a few have been sent over by my godparents in the states! This year, because we have got a new sofa we had to be careful what shape tree, it couldn’t be too busy and I think we got the perfect one!
Christmas Eve Breakfast
This started when my brother was about 4 maybe younger, my mum dropped us at McDonalds Christmas Eve and ever since then we have generally always tried to have breakfast. Unfortunately this year I have to work so Matt is going in my place! I normally go for Eggs Benedict and Joe will normally have a massive fry up! Either way, we fill our bellies ready to help prep the veggies before going to Church!
So those are 3 of my favourite traditions this time of year, what are yours??
This Weeks Installment……FOOD!
When I think of Christmas food my thoughts immediately turn to:
Terry’s Chocolate Orange
Brie, Bacon & Cranberry Sandwiches
Pigs In Blankets
In our house a few days before christmas my dad starts to put out all the Christmas sweets dotted around the house & are constantly refilled over the holidays – there is always something left that no one likes, but its still garunteed to go as you eat the last of the food. It is funny how certain sweets only manage to find their way out at Christmas, like Roses and Quality Street. I think every house in the UK has at least 1 tub of each of them and they are normally brought way in advance and the mum’s of the UK will hide them somewhere only to be brought out just before the big day! Terry’s chocolate orange is another one, I know you can buy the tub of segments, but it might just be me, I can never find a whole chocolate orange, only at Christmas!
Some people turn their noses up at sprouts and christmas pudding, but I love them both not together though! Christmas pudding has to be accompanied by cream of some sort, whether its flavoured cream (baileys is my favourite) or double cream and I always tend to go back for seconds!
Last year, I really enjoyed making my gingerbread men and this year, I have decided to go 1 step further and make a ginger bread house. I am going to be making it over the next few days and will of course share with you the finished product! However, I have been looking online for some inspiration…..
But I have this horrible feeling that mine is going to end up like this
So what’s your favourite christmas food?? what is the one thing that is always on your list? that you just cant survive the holiday season without?
I decided this was going to be my year, I was going to make my own Christmas cards!
I pinned and pinned and pinned ideas and the recurring theme was buttons! I brought some crafting bits in the states, but when I started the cards were really rubbish! So I changed my mind and created something else with those!
I brought some buttons and used my imagination and voila here is the finished product! Unfortunately not everyone is going to get a handmade card, but I didn’t realise how much time and effort it would take, also I have realised I am not the most creative when it comes to doing! I have fantastic ideas, but I just can’t seem to get it out on paper!
So to my family and friends that will be lucky enough to get a handmade card, I hope you like it!
Part 2…….Christmas Movies
Who doesn’t love a good Christmas movie? Sitting by the tree and watching a classic on the TV! I was at the Christmas Ideal Home Show the other week and as we were walking round there was a group of people gathered on some sofa’a and bean bags, I wasn’t sure why at first, but as we walked past they were all sat watching Miracle On 34th Street! All of them, from young kids to grown men were completely engrossed in the movie & as we walked past, I felt comforted by the music and the section of the film as it’s one that I have watched as a young girl. That’s the thing with Christmas movies, they all start to eventually have a memory to them! Now trying to work out what are my favourites is a bit difficult, but I have listed a few that I would defiantly recommend watching with a hot chocolate!
Well why not! It’s one of the funniest movies I have ever seen, always puts a smile on my face. This has to be one of my favorite parts
The Santa Clause (and you have to watch ALL 3)
For me Tim Allen IS Father Christmas, I love all 3 films and I have to watch all 3 before Christmas as well.
The Polar Express
I have asked a few people about this movie and always get mixed reviews! I love the believing aspect behind this film, it is always something that my dad has drummed into myself and my brother, especially as there is 9 years between us, I had to keep believing because of my little brother when I stopped believing. So if your little ones are at the age where they are questioning is “he” real? Sit them down in front of this and I think it will help install 1 more year of magic!
Because LOVE is important at this time of year and everyone loves a rom-com that’s based around Christmas!
It’s A Wonderful Life
For as long as I can remember my dad has watched this every year when he is writing his Christmas cards. Mum & I always tease him because its an old black and white film, but without walking in the house and hearing this film on it wouldn’t be Christmas!
I only watched this film for the first time about 4 years ago, on Christmas Eve before going to church (more on that in another post!)So now I have to watch it every Christmas Eve before going to Church!
I hope this has given you some idea’s on movies to watch, perhaps there might even be some that you haven’t seen and are thinking you might give them a watch! I promise, you wont be disappointed!
Part 1….Christmas Gifts
There are always things that you are guaranteed to either get as a gift or give as a gift at Christmas and unless you have said that you want these specific items, you then have to put on a ‘wow, thank you for this gift, I will never use it, but thanks!’ smile, although some people don’t open their gifts in front of you BUT I bet your bottom dollar that they will still make that “face” when they open it at home! Now I am not saying I am the best gift giver there is, blimey I have already brought things for people that I am hoping they will like, but I may have got it wrong and yes, they are some of the above!
This year, I am trying to do something a bit different, I am hoping (I say hoping as I may run out of time) to give a “open me now” gift to some of my friends, so that the Christmas joy can start a little early!
Something I always used to enjoy doing when I was younger was writing a Christmas list, it was endless, there was always something that I saw in the Argos catalogue that I wanted and as I grew up there was DVDs and CDs that I wanted, so I never struggled to find anything to ask for. The other day my parents asked me for a list, a list at the age of 26! I really struggled and there ended up being 10 things on there, just 10! 15 years ago I know I wouldn’t have struggled at all, oh how times change!
So, I hear you ask what have I put on my list this year……
The Merry Christmas Gift Box From Lush, it includes 5 products, they are all either bath bombs or bubble bars – so they will keep me going for a few months
Kate Spade small square stud earrings in pink. On Nordstrom at the moment they have 25% and they are sooo pretty!
Nice make up brushes, I currently have 2 make up brushes a kabuki brush and a bronzer brush that I have had for 18 months, but to go with that and to cross something off my list I have asked for a 90minute make up lesson with MAC and a MAC gift voucher.
The one person I really struggle to buy for is my boyfriend. He is so particular with his clothes and things he wants it’s really hard to make sure you have got the right things! Although this year, I have been thinking about it for a while and I am hoping that I have got him something’s that he will really like and something’s I will really like on him hahaha!
Now if you are stuck on what to get people and would like to get some DIY ideas, why not follow my Present Idea’s board on Pinterest? Here is a link to the page http://uk.pinterest.com/princessepink/present-idea-s
Well I am going to sign off now and start looking at what I have left to buy as I am going Christmas shopping with my mum tomorrow and I am hoping to cross a few more things off the list!
Have a lovely evening xxx
